Maybelline Velvet Matte Lip Creams – Review, Photos & Swatches
I’ve always loved matte lippies may it be a liquid matte lip cream or just your good ‘ol matte lipstick. As long as it’s pigmented and it looks good on my lips, I’m like: “Count me in, Baby!”. Regardless of how it feels on my lips, I always go for matte lips because, well, I like how sophisticated, elegant and timeless it looks like. Even though sometimes, my lips looks really chapped afterwards. I’m still “all matte, all the way!”. That’s why when I found out about Maybelline’s new line of Matte lip products, I became VERRRYY curious.

These babies come in a clear, plastic tube, pretty similar to the Elixirs which were released like a year ago, I believe. Anyway, I like that the packaging is pretty straight forward, so what you see is basically what you get in terms of the shade. It also comes with this sponge tear-drop applicator, so application was never an issue. Due to the shape of the sponge, it gave me that sharp, crisp line that you definitely need when applying red lippies. I hardly touched a lip brush whenever I use these lippies.
Now on to the shades..
Mat 1 is a bright, coral, pink shade especially when you’re looking at it right at the tube. But when applied, it just gives your lips a nice, warm pink shade, definitely suitable for all skin tones.
Mat 2 is very similar to Mat 1 only that this looks a lot more coral, rather than pink. It’s also a bit lighter than Mat 1 when applied.
Mat 5 is a bright, carrot, orange shade right from the tube but it’s a bit subtler than that when applied. If you’re not into orange shades or if you’re just getting used to the idea, then you might want to try this shade. It’s less intimidating compared to other “VA-VA-VOOM” orange shades that we have these days. It’s a lot wearable and it definitely suits all skintones.
Mat 6 is a dark fuchsia shade that looks really beautiful especially during fall or winter season. (azif nemen meron tayo nun?! Pero let’s say nalang…mkay?) It looks really pretty and it’s one of the most wearable shades in the entire line, if I may say so myself. (that is, if you’re not in to wearing red lippies )
I would describe Mat 8 (and all shades similar to this one) as a fire engine red shade. Or one could say that it’s a “Tomato red” shade. Either way, it’s a bit warmer than your usual red.
Mat 9, however, is your classic, go-to Marilyn Monroe red lippie. It’s a bit deeper than Mat 8 and definitely more blue-toned.
Mat 10 is your typical Barbie pink shade right off the tube and when swatched. But when worn, it becomes this beautiful magenta shade with a slight hint of purple. It’s definitely pretty and I know a lot of girls will fall head over heels with this shade especially during summer.
Mat 11 is my favorite red among all of the reds that are included in this collection. Mat 11 is actually the most opaque among all of the 9 shades and it can indeed cover your lips with just a single layer. It’s richly pigmented, a bit deeper than Mat 9 and a bit more blue-toned. If you’re looking for your perfect red lippie this Holiday season, then look no further! This is it! I’m telling you!
Mat 12 is probably the most wearable among the bunch simply becauseof it’s peachy nude shade. I’m not really into peachy nude lippies because they tend to wash me out or make me look like TWD but this one doesn’t. I’m betting this one will suit most skintones too!
Keep in mind that the lip swatches you saw above were done with just a single application (Not layer. I meant, I had to utilize whatever’s left in the sponge to even out the lip color). Also, as you can see, though they’re very opaque, they’re not matte. Regardless of how long you wait, they wont turn matte like the ones that you see from brands like Ofra, Colourpop, L.A. Splash, etc. You will also have to wait for at least 20-30 minutes for the lip product to set. By that time, your lippie will somehow look matte, but not “in-your-face matte”, if you know what I mean. It just means that the gloss, or the shine has completely faded leaving your lips that “stained” look.
What I do love about these lippies though is that, it’s very hydrating. It’s something that I love wearing when I don’t want to fuss about prepping my lips with a lip balm. (yes, sometimes, I’m lazy like that :P) I also don’t have to worry about it leaving my lips dry and chapped at the end of the day because it keeps my lips soft and plump while I have it on. It’s one of those lippies that you can just slap and go.
All in all, despite the fact that it really doesn’t give me that matte effect, I’m still head over heels with these lippies. I love them. My personal faves are Mat 6, Mat 11 and Mat 12. They’re definitely the most wearable and a lot of Pinays can definitely pull it off!
