Maybelline Mega Plush Volum’Express Mascara – Review & Photos

Hello everyone! How was your weekend? Me? Two words – Busy & Work. But before I resume with my usual ‘work’ stuff, I have another mascara review for you guys. This week, I’ll be reviewing the Maybelline Mega Plush Volum’Express Mascara. I got this mascara at Bon Marche, for let’s say PhP 200, because I got three mascaras for only PhP 600, which was a great deal. (Check out my haul here if you want to see the rest of the mascaras I got) I decided to get this product, not only because it’s already included in the set, but because I’m pretty interested in the product itself.

Maybelline Mega Plush Volum'Express Mascara

This mascara was released last Summer of 2012, but unfortunately it never reached our country. According to some websites, and some beauty videos I’ve seen, this retails for about $6 to $7 so that is approximately to PhP 245 -286 in our currency. Per the packaging, it provides ‘Massive + supple volume” to your lashes without it being stiff or brittle.

Here’s what the back of the carton/packaging looks like. I’m sorry I was not able to take a pic of the item while it was still on it, it was a bit crumpled, perhaps due to shipping. But the product was still intact and in excellent condition.

The mascara comes in a turquoise/aqua blue tube packaging with metallic fuchsia to go with it. Personally, I like it, its very retro-chick, reminds me of Elle Woods for some reason, I know Elle Woods is pink, but it reminded me of one of the dresses she wore. Anyway, I’m getting way off topic. But the tube is rather common in Maybelline’s line of mascara products. So there’s nothing much new, only the colors.

Here are some basic infos about the product:

The mascara comes with a bendable oval-shaped wand, which they refer to as “Flexor-Brush”. At first I thought the wand’s flexibility may be similar to “The Falsies” but boy oh boy, was I wrong. When I first tried the mascara, the wand was very, dare I say, ‘bouncy’ that it was a bit harder for me to control. It worked great for separating and defining the lashes (once you’re used to the wand). But in terms of volumizing and lengthening, it just didn’t work out for me.

It did provide me soft and brittle-free lashes, however, being that it is a ‘washable’ mascara, I find traces of the product transferring in my lower lash line. It has a lightweight formula due to its gel mousse consistency, so if you have sensitive eyes, this may work out for you. I find that this is much better for daily wear (running errands, work, etc) because it just gives your lashes an extra oomph by separating & defining them.

Here are some photos of me wearing the said mascara:

As you can see, it worked great in separating and defining my eyelashes. Forgive the second picture (two coats), if my lashes looked really weird, as I’ve mentioned, the wand is quite ‘bouncy’. What I noticed though, is after applying the third layer/coat, despite the lightweight formula, it weighed down my lashes. I think I’ll be satisfied with two coats with this mascara, thankyouverymuch. (Although I’m a three coats or more person)

As for the removal, being that it’s a non-waterproof/washable mascara, even a makeup cleansing wipe did the trick. Now for the longevity, as I’ve mentioned earlier, during maybe the first one to two hours after application, I noticed that there were already traces of mascara that transferred in my lower lashline. I wore the mascara for approximately four hours until I decided to remove it with a makeup cleansing wipe.

So, to summarize, here are my thoughts about the said product…

Soft, brittle-free lashes
The wand is excellent for separating & defining your lashes
Lightweight formula. Ideal for those with sensitive eyes.
Doesn’t flake
Washable/Non-waterproof – Easy to remove
The wand is a little too ‘bouncy’ to control
Didn’t do a good job in volumizing or lenghtening my lashes
Weighed down my lashes after applying the third layer/coat
Not available here in the Philippines

All in all, I don’t think I am a fan of this mascara. I love Maybelline’s “The Falsies” and “Magnum” but I don’t think this one was able to at least be at the same level with those two that I’ve mentioned. Of course, I will still use this, as I’ve mentioned, this is ideal for daily wear wherein you just want to give your lashes an extra oomph or definition. But overall, this product did not live up to my expectations.

Those are my two cents about the Maybelline Mega Plush Volum’Express Mascara. How about you guys? Do you like this mascara? Are you planning to get this mascara? Do you have this mascara? Do you like it? What’s your favorite Maybelline mascara? Comment & let me know!

I ca nsee that it lenghten s your lashes but you said it doesn’t.. hmm which would you prefer? f21 or this one?

    • That’s because I crimped my lashes when I was curling them (Darnit!). I was having some problems w/ my eyelash curler when I did that review.

I prefer the F21 mascara because even if I crimped my lashes before applying it, the formula of that somehow fixes it (I hope that makes sense, lol) so long as you’ve already figured out how to apply it (since the wand is a bit tricky & all).

I am currently using the Magnum Volum’ Express. Good thing I decided not to purchase, as I have thin lashes and I sweat a lot so I need something that is waterproof and can hold the curl. I super agree with you that the Magnum is a great mascara.
